Vibration Control of a Balcony in a Music Venue/Theater

In a new 2,150‑capacity, state‑of‑the‑art music and event venue, engineers sought an effective solution to mitigate rhythmic, audience‑induced vibrations in a 3‑sided, 270‑degree wrap‑around balcony. Because dynamic loads from concertgoers can cause noticeable vibration—particularly near mid‑span and edge regions—this project required a damping approach that preserved both comfort and architectural openness.

To meet this challenge, DEICON integrated six tuned mass dampers (TMDs) into the balcony system, placing two per side and tuning each pair to the first natural frequency of its respective region. Mode‑shape analyses identified areas with the largest vibration amplitudes, guiding precise TMD placement for maximum effectiveness. Measurements comparing the balcony’s response with TMDs locked versus operational revealed a substantial performance improvement: damping increased from 1.7% to 7.5%, reducing vibration levels by more than a factor of four.
This project highlights DEICON’s expertise in delivering tuned‑damping solutions that enhance occupant comfort while preserving architectural freedom in modern performance venues.
