BUILDINGS & STRUCTURES

AT DEICON, WE DESIGN, BUILD, AND IMPLEMENT PASSIVE, SEMI-ACTIVE, AND ACTIVE TUNED MASS DAMPERS FOR VARIOUS STRUCTURAL APPLICATIONS.

Wide column spans along with the use of high strength material (less of which would provide the needed structural integrity) tend to make pedestrian bridges, staircases, and floor systems flexible and oscillatory. Human activities (walking, running, dancing, etc.) can set these structures to vibrate excessively.

Modern light-weight structures such as chimneys, towers and high-rises are also susceptible to being oscillatory. Environmental effects (wind and seismic activities) can induce high levels of vibration in such structures.

When structural modifications such as adding mass and/or stiffness to flexible structures are neither practical nor effective enough in quieting vibration, DEICON recommends the use of tuned mass dampers (TMDs) in place of or in conjunction with these measures. High level of effectiveness, negligible weight penalty and ease of installation make TMDs a cost-effective and non-intrusive vibration control solution for both new and existing structures.

DEICON designs, builds, and implements passive, semi-active, and active tuned mass dampers for various structural applications.

Vibration Control of a Grand Ballroom Floor System Using Tuned Mass Dampers

Floor vibration of a grand ballroom subject to crowd loading is mitigated using tuned mass dampers along with stiffening.

Viscous Damping Devices Rebuilt

After 20+ years of operation, the 8 viscous damping devices of the 4 tuned mass dampers needed to be rebuilt. DEICON was commissioned to do this task by changing all the components of the viscous damping devices with their equivalent brand-new ones, testing the rebuilt units, and adjusting their damping coefficients.
