In an indoor cycling studio where up to 40 riders pedal rhythmically at about 60 rpm, staff noticed excessive vibration—particularly near the reception desk, located at the mid‑span of one of the long‑span bays. Numerical modeling and on‑site measurements revealed that the floor’s first natural frequency of 4.3 Hz aligned closely with the harmonic forces generated by cycling, causing the floor to resonate during group sessions.
To resolve the issue, DEICON designed and installed two tuned mass dampers (TMDs) beneath the floor system. These TMDs were tuned to the verified natural frequency and strategically located based on the mode shape, which showed that 40% of the floor area—or nearly 70% of the area in front of the middle girder—participated in the dominant mode. Commissioning tests demonstrated a remarkable improvement: vibration levels were reduced by approximately 80%, restoring comfort and stability to the studio environment
This project showcases DEICON’s expertise in diagnosing resonance‑induced vibration problems in environment with rhythmic activities such as gyms and implementing tuned‑damping solutions that deliver significant, measurable performance gains.
